Layer 30
The Open Frontier
Map what is well established, what is strongly constrained, and what remains unresolved across fundamental physics, cosmology, matter, life and mind.

Story step: The final layer marks the boundary between established frameworks and questions that remain genuinely open. A good frontier map shows uncertainty rather than hiding it.
1 · Frontier matrix
Filter open problems by domain and status. “Open” does not mean unconstrained: many unknowns are surrounded by strong experimental and observational limits.
2 · What makes a scientific hypothesis stronger?
Use this checklist to distinguish an interesting idea from a theory that can survive contact with evidence.

3 · Where frameworks meet—and stop
| Established frameworks | Frontier | Why it is open |
|---|---|---|
| General relativity + quantum field theory | Quantum gravity | No experimentally verified complete quantum theory of spacetime. |
| Standard Model + astrophysical/cosmological gravity | Dark matter identity | Gravitational evidence is strong; particle or alternative microscopic identity remains unknown. |
| FLRW cosmology + accelerating expansion | Dark energy | Acceleration is established observationally; the underlying physical explanation is not settled. |
| Navier–Stokes + high-Reynolds flows | Turbulence | Equations are known in many regimes, but predictive multiscale closure and mathematical questions remain hard. |
| Chemistry + nonequilibrium physics + evolution | Origin of life | Multiple plausible pathways exist; no complete experimentally established historical pathway. |
| Neural dynamics + behavior + report | Consciousness | Correlates and mechanisms are studied, but no generally accepted physical theory explains subjective experience. |
4 · Evidence state is categorical, not a fake probability
Scientific status is shown using qualitative evidence classes. These are not numerical probabilities of truth.
Categories summarize evidential status only: established observation, strongly constrained inference, active model space, or open explanatory question.
Scientific boundary: Open problems should stay open in the presentation. The frontier matrix is a scientific-status guide, not a probability ranking of truth. New theories must recover established results and make discriminating, testable predictions.
